Renovating the tree lawn on the west side of North Parkview has been a two-year discussion between the City and the Tree and Public Gardens Commission.  The crabapples and golden rain trees on the west side of Parkview are understory trees with a life span of 20 to 25 years.  Most of them were planted 20 to 25 years ago and are dead or have substantially declined.  In addition, golden rain is now considered an invasive species.

Not all the trees on the west side of Parkview are being removed – only the diseased, dying or dead trees.  Because of the power lines on the west side, the Tree Commission looked at replacement trees which would be a new species for our Arboretum; provide interest; only grow to 30 feet; and be urban tolerant.  We chose the Persian Ironwood which has all those properties.  The tree was chosen for its many outstanding attributes – interesting bark, colorful leaves, generally disease-free and moderate height.  We hate to see trees taken down, but we know this maintenance work will prepare the way for a healthier, longer-lasting, and more abundant treescape.
